Netherlands faces widespread strikes over defense spending and welfare cuts

The Netherlands is facing a wave of widespread labor strikes as workers across various sectors protest planned cuts to social welfare. The government is seeking to find an additional 19 billion euros annually to meet NATO defense spending targets, which has led to proposed social benefit reductions totaling approximately 6.5 billion euros.

The industrial action is expected to last nine days throughout September, beginning with significant disruptions at the ports of Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Zeeland. The strikes involve a broad coalition of workers, including railway employees, bus drivers, metalworkers, public servants, and staff at Heineken. Additionally, cleaners at Schiphol Airport are striking due to dissatisfaction with a new collective labor agreement that reduces sick pay.
