Netherlands intelligence law expansion faces privacy concerns
Proposed changes to the National Security Protection Act in the Netherlands are facing criticism from privacy and media organizations. The legislation aims to expand the powers of the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) and the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD).
Privacy First has warned that the bill could lead to mass surveillance, citing concerns over the large-scale interception of internet traffic and the use of artificial intelligence and automated data analysis. The organization also expressed concern regarding the proposed restructuring of oversight bodies, suggesting that the new College of Assessment and Supervision for Intelligence and Security Services (CTT) might provide insufficient control over operations.
Additionally, NDP Nieuwsmedia has raised alarms regarding the protection of journalistic sources. While the organization supports the requirement for judicial authorization for certain powers, it warns that the increased operational capabilities of intelligence services could inadvertently expose confidential communications and sources, potentially undermining press freedom and the democratic rule of law.
