Netherlands launches pedestrian monitor to map urban walking experiences
The Dutch Pedestrian Monitor (Nederlandse Voetgangersmonitor) has been launched to collect data on how residents experience walking in their municipalities. The initiative, involving Arcadis, seeks to address the current lack of detailed knowledge regarding daily pedestrian routes and experiences.
Participants can contribute their feedback until October 25. The monitor covers topics such as social safety, accessibility for those with limited mobility, traffic safety, and the overall quality of public spaces. In addition to answering questions, individuals can use a digital map to pinpoint specific locations they value or areas where they feel unsafe or encounter obstacles.
According to Dennis van Sluijs, an advisor at Arcadis, the data will help municipalities identify specific bottlenecks and implement relatively simple measures to improve the walking environment. The study is open to anyone who lives, works, studies, or frequently visits any municipality in the Netherlands.
