Netherlands farmers protest nitrogen policy with road blockades

Farmers in the Netherlands are intensifying protests against government nitrogen reduction plans. Recent actions include blocking the N35 road between Nijverdal and Wierden, obstructing access to the Springendal Natura 2000 area, and driving tractors on the A31 motorway in Friesland. In Lichtenvoorde, over 150 farmers delivered a formal letter of protest to the local municipality, expressing anger over policies they deem unworkable.

The unrest is driven by proposed measures to establish nitrogen-sensitive zones around approximately one hundred nature areas, which would require more extensive forms of agriculture. Tensions are particularly high in North Brabant, where the province intends to initiate expropriation procedures against five poultry farmers to reduce emissions near the De Peel and Kampina areas. This follows a court ruling involving the environmental organization Mobilisation for the Environment (MOB).

Industry groups, including Glastuinbouw Nederland, have warned that revoking valid permits sets a dangerous precedent that undermines legal certainty and investment stability for the entire business sector. Meanwhile, local political branches like the Deurne VVD are seeking more clarity through public information sessions to navigate the complex legal and environmental landscape.
