Netherlands labor strikes target social security cuts
Labor unions FNV and CNV are leading a wave of strikes across the Netherlands to protest proposed government cuts to the social security system.
A major 24-hour strike in the public transport sector has caused widespread disruption, with nearly 5,000 FNV members and over 2,000 CNV members participating. The action resulted in a near-total shutdown of train services and significantly reduced bus availability in major cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague. The disruption led to increased demand for taxis, with Uber reporting six times the usual number of reservations.
Following the transport strikes, thousands of workers in the metal and construction sectors are scheduled to strike on Friday, September 12. Key regions for these actions include Eindhoven and Velsen-Noord. While some companies, such as Tata Steel, reported no expected impact from the metal sector walkouts, unions emphasize that these actions are aimed at the government's austerity plans rather than employers. Unions are demanding that all planned cuts to the social safety net be withdrawn.
