Netherlands public transport strike disrupts national and international travel
A 24-hour nationwide strike by public transport workers in the Netherlands has paralyzed much of the country's transit network. Organized by the FNV and CNV unions, the industrial action is a protest against the Dutch government's proposed budget cuts to social security, which include reductions to unemployment benefits and disability assistance.
Train services across the national network have been halted, leaving major stations like Utrecht Centraal and Amsterdam Centraal largely deserted. While most rail traffic is suspended, a limited AirportSprinter service remains operational between Amsterdam Centraal, Schiphol Airport, and Hoofddorp, running four times per hour. The strike also impacts international rail connections, including Eurostar, ICE, and EuroCity services, affecting travel between the Netherlands and neighboring countries such as Germany, Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom.
Bus, tram, and metro services are also heavily disrupted, with significant uncertainty reported in regions like Zeeland and the Veluwe. In eastern regions, an international replacement bus service between Groningen and Leer continues to operate. The widespread disruption has led many large employers, such as ING and Unilever, to advise employees to work from home to avoid commuting difficulties.
