Netherlands withdraws from Eurovision 2027 over Israel participation
The Netherlands has officially withdrawn from the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, reversing a previous decision to return to the competition. The Dutch public broadcaster, NPO, announced that it could not find sufficient support among national broadcasters to facilitate a Dutch entry.
The decision stems from intense social and political division regarding Israel's participation in the contest, particularly in light of the conflict in Gaza. NPO media director Jurre Bosman stated that Israel's inclusion “elicits various reactions in society and causes discussion and division.”
This follows an earlier boycott by the broadcaster AVROTROS, which argued the event could “no longer be considered neutral.” While NPO had initially attempted to take responsibility for a Dutch entry through an independent team of experts, the plan failed to gain the necessary consensus among media houses. Despite the withdrawal from competition, the NPO confirmed that the contest will still be broadcast on public channels.
The 2027 contest is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria.
