Netherlands Eurovision Song Contest withdrawal
Overview
The Netherlands has officially withdrawn from the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, scheduled to be held in Burgas, Bulgaria. NPO Media Director Jurre Bosman stated that the participation of Israel in the contest has caused “significant debate and division within Dutch society,” leading the broadcaster to conclude there was insufficient support to organize a Dutch entry.
This decision reverses a previous plan announced in September to return to the competition after a one-year absence. Jet de Ranitz, Chair of the NPO Executive Board, acknowledged the decision would be a disappointment to fans but noted it was “too early” to participate given current sensitivities, stating the broadcaster has decided to “take a step back” for the time being. NPO executives further noted they could not find a suitable format for participation that would satisfy the broadcasters and staff involved.
The withdrawal follows internal pressure and an earlier boycott by the broadcaster AVROTROS, which argued the event could “no longer be considered neutral” due to geopolitical tensions and the conflict in Gaza. While the country will not send an artist, the national broadcaster NOS will continue to broadcast the semi-finals and the final with Dutch commentary. Following this decision, the Netherlands has also lost its seat on the Eurovision Song Festival Reference Group. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) confirmed that the seat, previously held by Dutch delegation head Claudia van der Pas, expired after the country’s decision not to participate. The EBU expressed regret over the decision but stated it respects the NPO's position.
