Castrol study identifies neurophysiological drivers of driving pleasure

A neurophysiological study commissioned by Castrol has revealed that the sensation of driving pleasure is not primarily driven by speed, but by a specific balance of mental and physical factors. Conducted at the PalmerSport circuit in the United Kingdom, the research utilized advanced sensors to monitor brain activity, heart rate, skin conductivity, and eye movements.

Analyzed by the neuroscience company Brainbox, the study identified three essential components for achieving a state of total immersion, often referred to as “flow”: visceral stimulation (physical and mental activation), intellectual engagement (cognitive focus on the task), and emotional balance (the equilibrium between excitement and fear).

Findings indicated that when these three dimensions are elevated but remain within a manageable threshold, drivers experience a “thrill.” However, if the intensity exceeds individual limits, the experience shifts into stress and anxiety. Notably, participants achieved high levels of engagement during karting at lower speeds, where focus and stimulation were optimized. In contrast, driving a McLaren Artura GT4 produced the highest biological activation levels, with researchers noting significant changes in eye movement and brain wave patterns during high-performance driving.
