A neurophysiological study commissioned by Castrol and analyzed by the neuroscience firm Brainbox has investigated the factors contributing to the sensation of driving pleasure and thrill. Using sensors to monitor brain activity, heart rate, skin conductivity, and eye movements, researchers examined participants during activities such as karting, off-road driving, and track driving.
The research indicates that driving pleasure is not primarily driven by speed, but by a specific balance of three components: visceral stimulation, intellectual engagement, and emotional balance. When these factors are elevated but remain within a manageable threshold, drivers experience a “thrill” or a state of total immersion known as “flow.”
Detailed findings from testing on a closed track in the United Kingdom—including scenarios involving a Land Rover Defender and a McLaren Artura GT4 racing car—showed that high engagement occurs when drivers maintain a sense of control. For instance, while driving the McLaren, participants averaged 70 eye movements per minute toward the ideal racing line and only 2.5 blinks per minute, accompanied by a significant increase in heart rate.
In contrast, the study notes that if the intensity of these dimensions exceeds an individual’s limits, the experience shifts from a thrill into stress, anxiety, or fear. This was observed when participants acted as passengers during aggressive driving, where physiological responses shifted toward stress and fear, characterized by much higher blink rates and erratic eye movements.
