Nutrition research highlights nutrient density over food processing
New research presented at the American Society for Nutrition’s 2026 annual meeting suggests that the level of food processing may not be as significant to health as previously believed. Led by Xiaowen Wang of the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, the study indicates that nutrient density may carry more weight than the degree of processing. Consequently, ultra-processed items such as protein bars, Greek yogurt, and whole-grain breads may support overall health if they consist of high-quality ingredients.
In related health discussions, reproductive endocrinologist Lucky Sekhon addressed common misconceptions regarding hormone health. Sekhon noted that while extreme physiological stress—such as caloric deprivation—can impact fertility and reproductive hormones, everyday psychological stress is unlikely to have a direct effect on fertility. Additionally, she highlighted that resistance training can support hormone health by improving insulin sensitivity through increased muscle mass.
