Polyscias fruticosa medicinal benefits and usage warnings
Polyscias fruticosa, often referred to as the ‘ginseng of the poor,’ contains valuable nutrients including glucosides, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, 13 amino acids, and vitamin B1. According to traditional medicine practitioner Bui Dac Sang from the Hanoi Association of Traditional Medicine, different parts of the plant offer various therapeutic benefits.
The leaves are noted for their cooling properties, helping to detoxify, relieve itching, and stop bleeding when applied to skin injuries. They are also used to treat digestive issues like bloating and diarrhea, and can assist postpartum women in stimulating milk production. For children, dried leaves placed under pillows may help with night sweats.
The roots are considered the core of restorative remedies, possessing a sweet taste and warm properties that improve blood circulation and physical stamina. They are frequently used in folk medicine to treat coughs, rheumatism, and back pain. However, experts warn that because the roots are rich in saponin, improper use or excessive dosage can lead to toxicity or adverse effects.
