Netherlands railway network hit by suspected coordinated sabotage
Suspected coordinated sabotage has caused massive disruptions to the Dutch railway network, affecting central, northern, and eastern regions of the Netherlands. The infrastructure manager, ProRail, reported that materials, including metal pipes approximately 1.5 meters long, were deliberately placed on or attached to the tracks at dozens of locations across the country.
The placement of these objects triggered safety system malfunctions by making track sections appear occupied, causing signals to turn red and halting train traffic. Major routes, including those serving Schiphol Airport and connecting cities like Utrecht, Amsterdam, Zwolle, and Arnhem, were heavily impacted. In Steenwijk, a train struck one of the objects, though no injuries were reported.
Due to the widespread nature of the incidents, ProRail stated it was not possible to provide replacement bus services. The Dutch National Police and the Dutch Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) are investigating the matter. State Secretary Annet Bertram described the suspected intentional disruption as ‘particularly worrying.’ The incidents coincided with Prinsjesdag, the day the Dutch government presents its annual budget.
