MLB postseason: White Sox and Cubs clinch playoff berths
Major League Baseball postseason spots are being finalized as several teams clinch their berths. The Chicago White Sox secured their first postseason appearance since 2021 after a 9-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals, completing a historic turnaround following consecutive 100-loss seasons. They remain in contention for the AL Central division title.
Simultaneously, the Chicago Cubs clinched a National League wild-card spot with a 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins. During the game, Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong joined the exclusive 40-40 club, becoming only the seventh player in MLB history to record at least 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season.
In the American League, the Cleveland Guardians also secured their third consecutive postseason berth following a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox, however, face uncertainty regarding the availability of first baseman Willson Contreras due to a hand injury as the playoffs approach.
