The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) has begun testing safety and monitoring systems for the Momaia tunnel on Section 4 of the Sibiu-Pitești Motorway (A1). The 1.35-kilometer tunnel, located between Tigveni and Curtea de Argeș, is the first bored tunnel constructed on a Romanian motorway.

The infrastructure is equipped with over 2,500 monitoring points, including intelligent fixed and mobile cameras and sensors. These systems are designed to detect traffic incidents or objects on the roadway, allowing for rapid responses such as lane restrictions or full tunnel closures. A dedicated monitoring center in Curtea de Argeș will feature 14 monitors and 36 computers, staffed by 11 specialists working in shifts to provide 24/7 surveillance.

Construction of this 9.86-kilometer section was carried out by the Austrian company PORR under a contract valued at approximately 1.678 billion lei (excluding VAT), funded through the 2021-2027 Transport Program. While the contractual deadline for completion is February 2027, authorities indicated that traffic could potentially open by the end of 2026, depending on the results of the technical tests and reception stages.
