Margina–Holdea A1 highway segment makes significant progress
The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) reports that work on the Margina–Holdea missing segment of Romania's A1 highway is advancing rapidly. The two galleries of Tunnel 1 have exceeded 90 % completion, while Tunnel 2 still requires excavation of roughly 270 m on the UMB‑executed gallery and 107 m on the Euro‑Asfalt‑executed gallery. Three working fronts are organised for these stages and excavation continues across ten fronts.
All four tunnel portals are finished and will undergo architectural finishing. Tunnel 2 will be equipped with modern safety and communication systems, including fans, emergency phones, sensors, hydrants and radio antennas. Road works have laid a stabilised ballast foundation coated with a cationic bitumen emulsion to reduce cracking. An on‑site asphalt plant and a prefabricated‑beam factory are operating, the latter producing 442 beams at a rate of about six 40‑metre beams per day.
The consortium UMB GRUP together with Euro‑Asfalt is executing the construction. Completion of the Margina–Holdea section will enable uninterrupted traffic on the A1 motorway between western and central Romania, linking the Lugoj–Deva corridor with the rest of the national network.
