Salmonella outbreak affects over 340 people across Europe
A salmonella outbreak has affected more than 340 people across seven European countries, with the United Kingdom being the hardest hit. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the UK has recorded at least 207 cases and one death. Other affected nations include the Netherlands with 106 cases, Belgium with 15, Germany with six, France with four, Austria with two, and Denmark with one.
At least 34 individuals have been hospitalized, with victims ranging in age from infants under one year old to seniors over 90. Investigators are primarily focusing on imported eggs served in restaurants and cafes as a potential source of the infection. However, health authorities are also examining poultry products as a possible link, following reports from infected individuals in the Netherlands who consumed chicken prior to falling ill.
In the UK, the outbreak was first noted around May 26, involving a single strain of Salmonella Enteritidis. Experts warn that the number of cases may continue to rise until the exact source is identified and control measures are implemented.
