Northeast US storms trigger tornadoes, flooding, and state of emergency

Severe storms and heavy rainfall have impacted the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic United States, bringing threats of flash flooding, damaging winds, and tornadoes. A flash flood threat affects over 32 million people along the Interstate 95 corridor, spanning from southern Connecticut to Virginia. High-risk areas include New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.

In Delaware, a likely tornado caused significant damage in Dover, prompting a state of emergency and calls for residents to stay indoors. The storm also knocked out power to more than 1,000 people in northern Delaware. In New York, possible tornadoes and waterspouts were reported near Atlantic Beach and the eastern Rockaways, damaging a beach club in Nassau County. Flooding also forced the closure of the Long Island Expressway in Queens.

Additional reports indicate emergency crews in New Jersey rescued dozens of people trapped in vehicles due to flash flooding. The storm system has also caused travel delays at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports.
