Northeastern US flash-flood and severe weather emergency

Overview

Severe storms and tornadoes continued to impact the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States through late August. On August 19, heavy rainfall placed over 32 million people along the Interstate 95 corridor under flash flood threats. In Dover, Delaware, a tornado caused significant destruction, including damage to motels and a Kraft Foods facility. While the city declared a state of emergency, officials reported no serious injuries. In Nassau County, New York, a waterspout that transitioned into an EF-1 tornado touched down at Atlantic Beach, damaging the Sun and Surf Beach Club, beach cabanas, and shattering the windows of approximately 30 vehicles. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency following the event. Flash flooding caused widespread disruption, including the closure of the Long Island Expressway in both directions in Queens and delays within the New York City subway system. In Jersey City, New Jersey, emergency crews rescued 69 people who were trapped in vehicles due to rising waters. Air travel also faced significant delays at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports. Although the state of emergency in Dover was lifted on Friday, August 20, cleanup efforts remained ongoing due to debris and blocked lanes. On August 27, severe thunderstorms dumped more than five inches of rain across parts of New Jersey. In South Jersey counties, including Camden and Gloucester, rainfall totals reached between three and seven inches. The overflow of Raccoon Creek tributaries caused a partial shoulder collapse on Route 322 near Swedesboro Road, creating major traffic delays. At Rowan University in Glassboro, flooding was severe enough to require kayaks for navigation in parking lots during student move-in week. In response to weather challenges, New York City officials launched an $8.4 million flood mitigation initiative in Queens.
