Shingles vaccine linked to lower risks of heart disease and dementia
Recent medical studies published in journals such as Nature Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine suggest that the recombinant shingles vaccine, Shingrix, may provide health benefits beyond preventing herpes zoster infections.
Research involving over 500,000 older adults indicates that recipients of the vaccine have a significantly lower risk of developing certain cardiovascular conditions. Specifically, data shows a 12 percent reduction in the risk of stroke and heart failure, a 10 percent reduction in ischemic heart disease, and an overall 9 percent reduction in cardiovascular disease burden.
Furthermore, the studies highlight a potential link between the vaccine and a reduced risk of dementia. One study found that Shingrix recipients had a 24 percent lower risk of being diagnosed with dementia over a four-year period. Researchers noted that if this relationship is proven to be causal, it could potentially prevent one in 17 dementia cases globally.
