Sleep deprivation impacts cognitive performance and safety

Research and experts highlight the significant impact of sleep deprivation on cognitive function, emotional regulation, and physical safety. Studies indicate that prolonged wakefulness can impair reaction times and attention to a level comparable to alcohol intoxication, posing risks in driving and high-stakes decision-making.

For children and adolescents, adequate rest is critical for memory consolidation and learning. Experts recommend that children receive 9 to 12 hours of sleep, while adolescents require 8 to 10 hours to support cognitive and emotional development. In professional environments, insufficient sleep—defined as less than seven hours for adults—can diminish executive functions such as risk assessment, impulse control, and concentration.

To improve sleep quality, specialists suggest maintaining regular schedules and managing evening routines. While screen use is often criticized, experts note that predictable, short periods of digital activity may be acceptable, provided they do not lead to endless scrolling. Reducing anxiety regarding occasional poor sleep is also recommended to prevent the cycle of insomnia.
