Digital stimulation impacts mental health and sleep

Experts are warning about the cognitive and physical impacts of excessive digital stimulation. Neuroscientist Renê Skaraboto notes that constant smartphone notifications create a state of perpetual urgency, which reduces focus, increases anxiety, and impairs decision-making. To combat this, specialists suggest creating specific windows for checking devices and utilizing focus modes.

Sleep quality is also heavily impacted by digital habits and mental clutter. Psychologist Shelby Harris explains that nighttime anxiety often stems from ruminating on past regrets or worrying about future scenarios. She recommends journaling before bed to shift focus toward positive experiences and reduce the mental noise that causes frequent waking.

There is a growing movement toward 'sensory rest' and digital disconnection. Some users are opting for 'dumbphones'—basic devices limited to calls and SMS—to establish physical barriers against smartphone dependency. Additionally, excessive screen time and urban noise are linked to irritability, stress, and difficulty concentrating. In fitness contexts, doctors warn that smartphone use during workouts can lead to mental fatigue and diminished physical performance by fragmenting attention and extending rest periods unnecessarily.
