Solar activity triggers geomagnetic storms and aurora visibility

Increased solar activity is expected to impact Earth, potentially causing geomagnetic storms between August 17 and 19, 2026. A coronal mass ejection (CME) that left the Sun on August 14 is projected to reach Earth, with the UK Met Office and the US NOAA forecasting geomagnetic storm levels ranging from G1 (minor) to G2 (moderate).

While these space weather events can disrupt satellite communications, radio connections, and power grids, experts indicate that an extreme weather event is unlikely. The probability of a particularly severe solar eruption is estimated at only 1 percent. Additionally, faster solar wind from a coronal hole may reach Earth starting August 18, contributing to periods of heightened geomagnetic activity.

This solar activity enhances the visibility of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. The phenomenon occurs when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere, creating colorful displays in the sky. Travelers planning trips to the Aurora Belt in 2026 and 2027 may benefit from these periods of increased solar activity to witness the lights.
