A total solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, with the path of totality crossing Spain from west to east and covering about 40 % of the country. The eclipse will be total in parts of Spain, Portugal and the north‑west of the Iberian Peninsula, lasting up to roughly one and a half minutes in places such as Oviedo. Portugal’s Montesinho Natural Park will see totality for about 26 seconds. The event will be visible as a deep partial eclipse across much of central Europe, with the Netherlands experiencing about 90 % coverage, the Czech Republic 86‑89 % around 20:11 local time, and Hungary up to 81 % in its western cities. Spain expects up to 15 million visitors; hotels in Zaragoza, Soria, Asturias and other popular sites are reported as fully booked. Astronomical societies and planetaria in the Netherlands and elsewhere are opening their doors and organising observation trips. All public viewing must use ISO 12312‑2 certified eclipse glasses or suitable solar filters to protect eyesight.
