Suriname introduces new salary structure for nurses to combat brain drain

The Surinamese government has introduced a new salary structure for healthcare workers to combat a significant brain drain in the medical sector. Starting at the end of November, nurses can expect monthly earnings ranging from US$ 700 to US$ 1,000.

Minister of Health, Welfare, and Labor André Misiekaba noted that nearly 1,000 nurses, including specialists in intensive care, neonatal care, and operating rooms, have left the country between 2019 and 2025. To address this, the government is implementing a phased increase that includes additional allowances for afternoon shifts, night shifts, transport, and overtime.

To fund these improvements, the government plans to adjust hospital daily rates. Furthermore, the administration is focusing on professional development; a collaborative program with the Netherlands is set to begin in October, aiming to train 175 nurses as specialized staff within one year. The new system also differentiates pay based on education levels and responsibilities, ranging from nursing assistants to highly specialized professionals.
