US economy faces rising inflation and holiday spending shifts

US economic data reveals a complex landscape of rising costs and resilient consumer spending. The National Retail Federation forecasts holiday retail sales to reach $1.013 trillion, a 4.2 percent increase over 2025, driven by strong momentum despite inflationary pressures. Retailers expect to hire between 325,000 and 375,000 seasonal workers.

However, consumers and corporate executives are facing significant economic strain. CEO confidence fell to its lowest level since mid-2025, mirroring a decline in consumer sentiment. Inflation is being driven by high energy costs, with gas prices rising 20 percent in September, which has subsequently increased wholesale costs for shipping, warehousing, and food.

Specific sectors are seeing sharp price hikes. Toy prices have surged 6.6 percent over the past year, influenced by import tariffs on Chinese goods and rising petroleum costs used in plastic manufacturing. While the US and China have recently agreed to reduce tariffs on certain goods, the cumulative impact of trade policies and Middle East conflicts on commodity and shipping costs is expected to persist.
