Vitamin D and nutrition play key roles in bone health and osteoporosis prevention

Vitamin D plays a critical role in bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis, a condition affecting over four million people in Germany. Because Vitamin D is fat-soluble, its absorption is significantly improved when consumed alongside dietary fats. Natural sources of the vitamin include cod liver oil, fatty fish such as herring, eel, salmon, and sardines, as well as egg yolks and certain mushrooms. Notably, the Vitamin D3 form is found exclusively in animal sources.

Nutritional deficiencies can exacerbate the risk of bone fractures. While the Robert Koch Institute reports that approximately 44 percent of adults in Germany have adequate Vitamin D levels, maintaining proper intake is essential for managing conditions like osteoporosis and supporting joint health. Experts also emphasize the importance of monitoring blood levels and adhering to safety guidelines, such as those provided by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), to avoid oversupply through fortified foods.
