Vitamin D deficiency linked to increased gynecological cancer risk

A large observational study published in Frontiers in Nutrition has linked vitamin D deficiency to an increased risk of gynecological cancers. Analyzing data from over 1.3 million women across 150 health organizations, researchers found that women with low vitamin D levels had a 47% higher risk of developing gynecological cancer compared to those with normal levels. Specifically, the risk increased by 55% for uterine corpus cancer, 31% for cervical cancer, and 30% for ovarian cancer.

Scientists suggest the active form of vitamin D, calcitriol, may influence cell growth and immune response in ovarian, endometrial, and cervical tissues. However, they noted that as an observational study, the findings indicate an association rather than direct causation.

In addition to cancer risks, health experts warn that reduced sunlight exposure during winter can lower natural vitamin D production, which is essential for calcium absorption and bone health. Experts recommend monitoring dietary intake and lifestyle habits, particularly for older adults and those working indoors, while cautioning against self-medicating with supplements without professional guidance.
