Health risks associated with vitamin D deficiency

Recent studies published in Frontiers in Nutrition have identified links between vitamin D deficiency and various health complications.

An observational study involving over 1.3 million women suggests that low vitamin D levels are associated with an increased risk of gynecological cancers. Specifically, researchers noted a 55% higher risk for uterine corpus cancer, a 31% increase for cervical cancer, and a 30% increase for ovarian cancer. Scientists propose that calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, may influence immune response and cell growth in these tissues.

Further research involving adults aged 40 and older indicates that vitamin D deficiency is also linked to an increased risk of varicose veins. Individuals with levels at or below 19.9 ng/mL face a 62% higher risk of developing the condition compared to those with levels of 30 ng/mL or higher. This deficiency is also associated with higher risks of inflammation and varicose veins with ulcers.

Health experts and organizations, such as the Robert Koch Institute, emphasize the importance of maintaining optimal vitamin D levels for bone, muscle, and immune health.
