Vitamin D deficiency linked to increased risk of varicose veins

A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition suggests a significant link between vitamin D deficiency and the development of varicose veins. Research involving adults aged 40 and older indicates that individuals with vitamin D levels at or below 19.9 ng/mL face a 62% higher risk of developing varicose veins compared to those with sufficient levels (30 ng/mL or higher).

The study also noted increased risks for specific complications: a 122% higher risk for varicose veins with ulcers, a 171% higher risk for inflammation, and a 45% higher risk for other complications. Vascular surgeon Dra. Aline Lamaita noted that these findings suggest nutritional aspects are important factors alongside genetics and hormonal changes.

Regarding optimal levels, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) suggests a range between 30 and 50 ng/mL is optimal for vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for calcium and phosphorus absorption, supporting bone, muscle, and immune system health. Deficiencies can lead to conditions such as rickets in children, osteomalacia, and osteoporosis.
