Vitamin D intake during pregnancy may benefit child development

Adequate Vitamin D intake during pregnancy may provide long-term benefits for child development and reduce pregnancy complications. According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), Vitamin D is essential for maintaining normal bone and muscle functions and participating in various metabolic processes.

The American Pregnancy Association notes that Vitamin D plays a critical role in the healthy bone development of the unborn child. Furthermore, a deficiency in Vitamin D has been linked to an increased risk of pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia, and may also influence risks related to premature births and infections.

Research suggests these benefits may extend well into childhood. A study by researchers at the University of Copenhagen examined 498 children approximately ten years of age whose mothers received either 70 micrograms or 10 micrograms of Vitamin D per day during pregnancy, indicating potential developmental advantages that persist long after birth.
