Netherlands drought triggers widespread water extraction bans
Persistent drought across the Netherlands has prompted multiple water management authorities to implement emergency restrictions. In the Amstel, Gooi, and Vecht region, a ban on using surface water for irrigation is in effect between 06:00 and 22:00 to minimize evaporation and prevent water levels from dropping further.
In the Rijn en IJssel region, a temporary ban on pumping groundwater has been introduced to protect ten vulnerable nature areas and their surrounding zones from irreparable damage. This follows a previous ban on extracting surface water from ditches and streams. Similarly, the Drents Overijsselse Delta has restricted surface water extraction in the Ankersmit supply area due to low levels in the IJssel river.
Other regional measures include the construction of 24 new weirs in East Brabant by Waterschap Aa en Maas to improve water retention. In South Holland, Waterschap Hollandse Delta is pumping water from the Haringvliet to the Brielse Meer to combat salinization. Additionally, authorities have reported issues with water quality, including blue-green algae blooms in the Hoeksche Waard, and have restricted lock operations on the Vecht to conserve water levels.
