Overview

The IJsselmeer, a primary freshwater reservoir, is struggling to replenish evaporative losses due to dry conditions in the Upper Rhine and reduced snowmelt. In response to persistent drought, authorities have implemented increasingly strict restrictions. In the Amstel, Gooi, and Vecht region, a ban on using surface water for irrigation is now in effect between 06:00 and 22:00 to minimize evaporation. To protect ecosystems from irreparable damage, such as the drying of peat soils, the Waterschap Rijn en IJssel has maintained a temporary ban on groundwater pumping in and around ten vulnerable nature reserves.

Regional measures continue to target specific water sources. In Overijssel, Waterschap Drents Overijsselse Delta has restricted surface water extraction in the Ankersmit supply area to protect the IJssel. To combat salinization, Waterschap Hollandse Delta is pumping freshwater from the Haringvliet to the Brielse Meer, while Waterschap Aa en Maas is constructing 24 new weirs in East Brabant to improve soil water retention.

Additional complications have emerged, including restricted lock operations on the Vecht to conserve water levels and water quality issues, such as blue-green algae blooms in the Hoeksche Waard.
