West Nile virus outbreaks reported in Greece, Netherlands, Spain, and Los Angeles

West Nile virus outbreaks are being reported across multiple regions, including Europe and the United States. In Greece, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) has recorded 396 cases and 36 deaths since the start of the year, with significant activity in the Thessaly region.

In the Netherlands, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reports 44 confirmed cases and 5 deaths, noting that one case was transmitted via blood transfusion. Meanwhile, in Spain, Extremadura has recorded 59 cases and two deaths, while Andalusia reports 67 human cases, prompting heightened surveillance in several municipalities.

In the United States, Los Angeles County is experiencing a significant surge, with 100 reported cases and five deaths. Health officials state this is the highest number of cases seen this early in the mosquito season in nearly a decade, attributing the increase to unusual humidity and El Niño weather patterns. In Cyprus, veterinary services confirmed five horses in the Paralimni area tested positive for the virus, though no deaths were reported among the animals.
