1. FC Union Berlin performance and management shifts

Under manager Mauro Lustrinelli, 1. FC Union Berlin initially saw improved defensive stability through a tactical focus on pressing and compactness. This approach, driven by the center-back partnership of Felix Uduokhai and Zeno van den Bosch, resulted in a 0-0 draw against Borussia Dortmund and a 1-0 win over Elversberg, though it led to the benching of Leopold Querfeld.

However, the club's momentum shifted following a 0-5 defeat in the DFB-Pokal against Cologne. The match saw Saïd El Mala assist Linton Maina for the opening goal, leading to a dominant victory for Köln. Lustrinelli expressed shock at the result, stating there were no prior signals that such a collapse would occur. This loss triggered internal unrest, with supporters calling for action against the coaching staff. Analysts have pointed to squad composition issues and the failure of manager Horst Heldt to secure adequate defensive replacements, as well as a lack of quality in the attacking center due to injury. Commentator Béla Réthy criticized the team's recent style of play, describing it as “some of the least attractive football seen in the Bundesliga for a long time.”

As the club prepares for a Bundesliga rematch against Köln at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, Union Berlin sits in 17th place with six points. The team has struggled with offensive production, scoring only six goals in the league so far. In contrast, Köln occupies 12th place with eight points, though they have yet to secure a single point in away matches this season.
