2026 Atlantic hurricane season activity

Overview

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has seen multiple tropical storms develop in succession. On September 25, Tropical Storm Gonzalo formed in the eastern Atlantic near the Cabo Verde Islands, bringing expected rainfall to the islands and parts of West Africa, including Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, and Senegal. At that time, Gonzalo coexisted with Tropical Storm Fay.

By September 28, Tropical Storm Hanna formed in the central subtropical Atlantic, becoming the eighth named storm of the season. Hanna was located east-northeast of Bermuda and was projected to remain over open waters. During this period, Tropical Storm Fay remained active near the Azores. Meteorologists noted that the season has experienced a record minimum of hurricane formations, a trend attributed to El Niño conditions.
