2026 Badminton World Championships progress

Overview

The 2026 BWF World Championships in New Delhi have seen mixed results for several top contenders as the tournament progresses into the quarterfinal stages.

In the men’s singles, Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan has advanced to the quarterfinals following a victory over India’s Ayush Shetty (21-19, 21-11). Farhan is scheduled to face Taiwan’s Chou Tien-chen in the next round. This follows the earlier second-round exit of Lakshya Sen against American Garrett Tan.

In the doubles categories, Indonesia’s campaign has faced setbacks in the quarterfinals. Second-seeded men’s doubles pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri were eliminated by Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan (19-21, 16-21). In women’s doubles, Rachel Allessya Rose and Febi Setianingrum also exited the tournament after losing to China’s Li Yi Jing and Luo Xu Min (13-21, 14-21). Other Indonesian representatives remaining in the competition include the women’s doubles pair Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, and the mixed doubles duo Amri Syahnawi and Nita Violina Marwah.

For India, ninth seed P.V. Sindhu was eliminated in the pre-quarterfinals by China’s Wang Zi Yi (11-21, 21-15, 17-21), ending her pursuit of a sixth World Championship medal. However, Indian doubles pairs have seen success: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have advanced to the men’s doubles quarterfinals, and the unseeded women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also secured a place in the quarterfinals, marking the first time an Indian women’s doubles pair has reached this stage since 2015.
