2026 FIRST Global Challenge robotics competition
Overview
The 2026 FIRST Global Challenge has commenced at Songdo Convensia in Incheon, South Korea, marking the first time the event has been hosted in the country. Organized by the U.S.-based non-profit FIRST Global, the competition runs from October 7 to 10, focusing on the theme ‘Wildfire’ to task participants with developing robotic solutions for wildfire suppression and disaster prevention.
The event features 186 teams representing 185 countries, with an expected total attendance of approximately 4,500 people, including 876 competitors and 360 mentors. This year’s theme, ‘Igniting Innovation,’ centers on wildfire prevention and recovery, requiring students aged 14 to 18 to use custom-built robots to navigate simulated environments involving detection, suppression, and restoration.
LG Electronics is serving as a major sponsor, utilizing the platform to showcase its robotics vision and physical AI technology. The company is hosting an exhibition booth featuring its humanoid robot, LG CLOiD, to engage with the young innovators. Incheon Mayor Park Chan-dae noted the city’s goal to use such international exchanges to foster a growth ecosystem for the robot and physical AI industries.
Beyond technical challenges, the program includes cultural performances, a flag parade, and tours of Incheon Smart City and Ganghwa Island. Prior to the start of the competition, national teams from Panama and Kenya departed for South Korea. The Kenyan delegation, which previously earned a silver medal in 2025, was officially flagged off by Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo. The Panamanian team, consisting of five students from various institutions including Colegio Bilingüe Visión del Saber and St. Peter Academy, received support from the STEAM education organization FUNDESTEAM.
