2026 Global Hunger Index results

Overview

The 2026 Global Hunger Index reports varying levels of food security across different nations. Moldova has achieved a low level of hunger, ranking 25th out of 122 states with a score of 5. While the country has shown significant long-term progress since 2000, nutritional challenges remain, including stunting in 4.2% of children under five.

Morocco is also classified with low hunger levels, ranking 47th. However, its score has risen from 8.2 in 2018 to 9 in 2026, indicating a decline in progress. Despite being a successful exporter of high-value agricultural products like citrus and berries, Morocco faces vulnerabilities due to a 13.7% stunting rate in children under five, heavy reliance on grain imports, and high energy dependency.

In contrast, Bangladesh is categorized under ‘moderate hunger’ with a score of 19.2, ranking 84th globally. Although the nation has seen improvements in stunting, the rate of underweight children under five has risen to 12.9%, the highest recorded since 2000.

Pakistan and India both face ‘serious’ food security challenges. Pakistan ranks 106th globally with a score of 25.5, the second-worst in South Asia behind Afghanistan. Pakistan reports a 16.1% undernourishment rate and a 33.6% stunting rate among children under five. India remains in the ‘serious’ category with a score of 24.1. While India has seen a 20.7% decline in child stunting since 2000, it continues to struggle with multidimensional hunger metrics.

Globally, the fight against hunger has faced setbacks, with the global score rising to 18.1 in 2026. Factors such as conflict, inflation, and extreme weather have hindered food access worldwide.
