2026 Zambian general election campaign
Overview
As the August 13, 2026, general election approaches, political activity in Zambia has intensified. President Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND) conducted a two-day campaign tour across Central Province, visiting several districts including Nangoma and Kapiri Mposhi. During these rallies, Hichilema pledged continued development in agriculture, mining, and livestock, while reaffirming commitments to free education.
Simultaneously, internal political shifts have emerged within the opposition landscape. Major Robbie Chizyuka, a founding figure of the UPND and former Member of Parliament, issued a public apology for his role in supporting Hichilema’s rise to national politics. Chizyuka stated that Hichilema was supported in 2006 primarily due to his financial capacity and expressed regret that other factors were not considered. Chizyuka has since endorsed the Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu ticket, joining other veteran figures in an effort to challenge UPND influence in the Southern Province.
