Food poisoning incidents in Indonesia MBG program

Overview

Incidents of suspected food poisoning linked to the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program have been reported in different regions of Indonesia.

In Semarang, over 700 individuals, including 693 students and 14 teachers at SMKN 6, reported symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after consuming meals provided under the MBG program. Health officials activated a rapid-response team, treating 698 people on-site and referring nine to health facilities. An epidemiological investigation is underway, with food samples and specimens collected for laboratory analysis.

In North Sumatra, approximately 353 students experienced health complaints after consuming meals from the same program. Governor Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution visited an eleventh-grade student from SMK Negeri 1 Berastagi who was placed in intensive care at RSU Haji Medan after losing consciousness. The provincial government has issued an apology and committed to medical support for the affected students, emphasizing the need to prevent future occurrences.
