East Nusa Tenggara earthquake relief efforts

Following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Flores and seven regencies in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on August 15, 2026, Muhammadiyah has launched extensive humanitarian operations. The earthquake impacted 118 health service facilities in the region, with reports of 1,674 people sick or injured.

In late August, the Muhammadiyah Emergency Medical Team (EMT) established a WHO-standard Type 1 fixed field hospital in Dampek, East Manggarai. According to EMT Muhammadiyah Chairperson Dr. Corona Rintawan, the mission is to “strengthen the local health system rather than replace it,” ensuring local community health centers can function during the emergency.

By early September, relief efforts expanded through the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) and Lazismu. Operations are organized into health, non-health, and logistics clusters. In addition to medical services provided by fixed and mobile units, the organization has established community kitchens serving approximately 1,750 people, provided clean water and sanitation, and offered psychosocial support to over 1,700 individuals. Logistics efforts include the distribution of food, school kits, family kits, and tarpaulins to displaced survivors.
