Overview

The Uungula Wind Farm project near Wellington has progressed from the transport of infrastructure components to the successful installation of its first turbine.

In early August 2026, the transport of the first turbine blade began from the Port of Newcastle, traveling via the Golden Highway. Authorities issued warnings regarding these “mega-sized loads,” advising motorists to exercise caution and remain behind escort vehicles.

By late August 2026, Squadron Energy reported that the first turbine was fully erected and in motion following the installation of three 80-metre blades. The company stated that construction is more than two-thirds complete and the project is transitioning into the tower installation phase. Once fully operational, the 414MW wind farm is expected to power more than 220,000 homes.
