Seismic activity in Italy

Overview

A series of seismic events occurred across various Italian regions in early September 2026.

On September 4 and 5, multiple tremors were recorded in Calabria, Sicily, and Rieti. In Calabria, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake near Castiglione Cosentino caused residents to flee their homes, with the Mayor noting that “some debris fell from the ceiling of the municipal council building.” Sicily experienced several tremors near San Fratello and Caronia, while a sequence of smaller earthquakes was recorded in Accumoli, Rieti.

On September 7, further activity was reported. A magnitude 2.9 earthquake occurred near Aprigliano in the Cosenza province, following the earlier activity in the Castiglione Cosentino area. Additionally, a minor magnitude 1.7 earthquake was recorded at sea off the coast of Liguria near Spezia.
