European Mobility Week initiatives

European Mobility Week, scheduled for September 16 to 22, 2026, involves various regional initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable and accessible urban transport under the theme ‘Mobility for All’ and a focus on intergenerational justice.

In Portugal, the municipality of Albergaria-A-Velha is hosting programs such as free transport services, solidarity cycling events, and specialized walking or cycling routes for children, including ‘PEDIBUS’ and ‘BIKEBUS’ initiatives. In Belgium, recent data indicates a rise in bicycle commuting, though this has been accompanied by a significant increase in accidents involving electric scooters.

Serbia is participating in the campaign with activities across several cities, including Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, Novi Pazar, Aranđelovac, and Subotica. European Union Ambassador to Serbia, Andreas fon Bekerat, noted that the initiative allows for centering citizen needs in discussions regarding urban development and transport infrastructure, emphasizing that safe, eco-friendly mobility is essential for quality of life.

In Romania, the ‘Marea Pedalare’ (Great Cycling) event will take place in western Romania across 12 communities in the Timiș, Caraș-Severin, and Hunedoara counties. Coordinated by the RO Bike Valley team, the program includes workshops for primary school students and organized rides to promote cycling as a viable transportation alternative.

Regional activities continue to expand. In Greece, Corinth is hosting experiential activities for people with disabilities, while Thessaloniki emphasizes the need for improved cycling infrastructure. Slovenia is utilizing health centers to encourage walking and cycling to combat sedentary lifestyles. In Italy, initiatives range from cycling counts in Chiavari to subsidized 5-euro weekly transit passes in Siracusa. Montenegro’s Tivat is organizing eco-boat rides and coastal cleanups. In France, efforts include the deployment of ‘vélis’ in Île-de-France and doubled carpooling incentives in Neyron.
