Weather patterns in Yogyakarta

Weather forecasts for the Special Region of Yogyakarta indicate shifting atmospheric conditions during August and September 2026. In mid-August, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted hazy conditions that could reduce visibility, particularly in Kulonprogo and Bantul, where humidity was expected to reach 99 percent.

By mid-September, the forecast for Yogyakarta shifted to predominantly cloudy conditions across all five regencies and cities, including Kulonprogo, Bantul, Gunungkidul, Sleman, and Yogyakarta City. Temperatures in the region were expected to range from a minimum of 20 degrees Celsius to a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius.

As of mid-September, the region is facing extreme dry conditions driven by a strong El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to persist until early 2027. The BMKG reported that the Special Region of Yogyakarta has recorded the longest drought streak in Indonesia at 131 consecutive days without rain. This prolonged dry spell has increased the risk of forest and land fires, as approximately 81 percent of Indonesia’s seasonal zones are currently in the dry season.

Recent reports from the BMKG confirm that Yogyakarta’s 131-day period without precipitation remains a significant outlier, followed by Central and East Java. While Yogyakarta faces these extreme dry spells, other parts of the archipelago are experiencing varied conditions, such as localized heavy rain in Aceh and Sumatra, and rising temperatures in East Java that may reach 37 degrees Celsius in coastal areas by October.
