French municipal election annulments
Overview
Administrative courts in France have annulled the results of recent municipal elections in Tournefeuille, Vénissieux, and Vaulx-en-Velin due to various irregularities.
In Tournefeuille, the Administrative Tribunal of Toulouse overturned the election of Socialist Party mayor Frédéric Parre and his deputies. The decision followed a second round where Parre won by a single vote. The court cited irregularities including a ballot found with a void voter card and a discrepancy where 671 ballots were counted despite only 670 signatures on an attendance list.
In the Lyon area, the Lyon Administrative Court has expanded its rulings regarding March 2026 elections. In Vénissieux, the results won by La France Insoumise (LFI) candidate Idir Boumertit were invalidated due to fraudulent residency declarations by the RN-UDR list led by Quentin Taïeb, who has been declared ineligible for 24 months.
In Vaulx-en-Velin, the court annulled the victory of LFI mayor Abdelkader Lahmar because a centrist list failed to disclose a candidate’s Dutch nationality, violating the electoral code. Both LFI mayors have denounced the decisions as unjust, arguing that the errors were committed by opposing lists. Both parties intend to appeal to the Conseil d’État.
A third LFI victory in Saint-Fons is also facing potential annulment following similar recommendations from a public rapporteur regarding irregularities on a competing list.
