Femicide incidents in Venezuela
Overview
Recent reports highlight separate instances of fatal gender-based violence in Venezuela.
In Anzoátegui state, Jesús Carrión, an active police officer, pleaded guilty to the triple murder of his former partner, Angelis Estefani Guerra Tocuyo, and her two daughters. Carrión used his service weapon during the attack in the Lomas del Sol community. Local residents noted a history of abuse, and demonstrators later gathered at the Public Ministry in Puerto La Cruz to demand justice.
In Apure state, authorities arrested Manuel Evangelisto Padilla Corrales for the femicide of Karleanny Campos Pulido. Campos was attacked with a knife in the El Recreo parish; her body was subsequently found in a lagoon. Following an operation by the Bolivarian Police of Apure, the suspect was transferred to the Ninth Prosecutor's Office to face charges under the Organic Law on the Right of Women to a Life Free of Violence.
In Carabobo state, two femicides were reported within a 24-hour period. In the Diego Ibarra municipality, Dorian Emmanuel Ortiz Viloria, an active officer of the National Bolivarian Police (PNB), shot and killed his partner, Yasmira Maglet Sánchez Castro, during a verbal dispute at a lottery agency. Following the killing, Ortiz Viloria committed suicide via a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Hours earlier, in the Naguanagua municipality, 23-year-old Yurexis Carolina Ramos Hernández was killed by her partner in the Las Invasiones Vietnam sector; authorities cited jealousy as the motive. The Scientific, Criminal, and Investigative Corps (Cicpc) is investigating both incidents.
