Seismic activity in Indonesia

Overview

In mid-September 2026, Indonesia experienced a series of significant seismic events. A deep-focus earthquake with a magnitude between 6.5 and 6.6 occurred in the Java Sea, northeast of the Thousand Islands. Due to its extreme depth of approximately 368 to 376 kilometers, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed there was no tsunami threat. While tremors were felt across Java and parts of Sumatra, no major casualties or significant structural damage were immediately reported, though Jakarta’s Commuter Line services were briefly suspended for safety inspections.

On October 4, 2026, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the country at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The early morning event caused concern among residents, though no casualties or infrastructure damage were reported.

On October 11, 2026, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the waters southwest of Sukabumi, West Java, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The BMKG confirmed the event posed no tsunami threat to the southern coast of West Java. The earthquake was attributed to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate via oblique thrust movement. Tremors were felt in the Sukabumi Regency areas of Surade, Cibitung, and Tegalbuleud with an estimated intensity of II MMI. No official accounts of casualties or significant structural damage have been reported.
