World War II bomb discoveries in Germany

Overview

In October 2026, two separate incidents involving unexploded World War II ordnance required evacuations in the German cities of Essen and Dortmund.

In Essen, authorities ordered the evacuation of the University of Duisburg-Essen and surrounding buildings within a 300-meter radius of Segerothstraße 73 to facilitate the disposal of a 500-kilogram British bomb. The operation was expected to affect approximately 1,050 people.

In Dortmund, the discovery of two 250-kilogram British bombs in Westfalenpark caused significant disruptions, including the closure of the B1 federal highway in both directions between B54/Ruhrallee and Märkischer Straße. The discovery prompted a 300-meter evacuation radius around major venues, such as the Westfalenhallen and Signal Iduna Park.

On Wednesday, October 21, the two bombs in Dortmund were successfully defused. Despite the proximity of the ordnance and local road closures, organizers of the ‘Rammstein Symphonic Experience’ concert at Westfalenhalle 2 announced the event would proceed as scheduled, advising attendees to monitor official updates regarding potential delays.
